Fatima Family America Step 2: Wearing the Brown Scapular

John C. Preiss

Wearing the Brown Scapular is a profound act of faith and devotion for members of Fatima Family America. As Step 2 in our journey, it stands as a visible sign of our consecration to Mary, a symbol of her maternal protection, and a daily call to live in the grace of Christ.

The Meaning of the Brown Scapular

The Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is one of the most cherished sacramentals in the Catholic tradition. Unlike a decorative necklace, the scapular consists of two small pieces of brown wool, joined by cords and worn over the shoulders. Its origin traces to a vision given to St. Simon Stock in 1251, when the Blessed Virgin Mary promised her special protection to those who wear it with devotion and strive to live faithfully in Christ.

Wearing the scapular is not a magical guarantee of salvation. Rather, it is a sign of our desire to follow Jesus as Mary did—faithfully, prayerfully, and with a heart open to God's will. The Church teaches that the scapular is a sign of salvation when worn with faith, accompanied by prayer, repentance, and participation in the sacraments.

How to Live This Step

  • Wear the Scapular Daily: Place the scapular over your shoulders each morning as a sign of your consecration to Mary and your commitment to imitate her virtues—especially humility, chastity, and prayerfulness.

  • Renew Your Marian Commitment: Begin each day with a brief prayer of consecration, offering yourself to Jesus through Mary. This daily renewal deepens your relationship with her and strengthens your resolve to live as her devoted child.

  • Let the Scapular Remind You: Throughout the day, let the presence of the scapular remind you to live chastely, faithfully, and prayerfully within your vocation. It is a gentle prompt to align your actions and thoughts with the example of Mary.

Connection to C.A.R.E.

The act of wearing the scapular is woven into the C.A.R.E. program—Confession, Adoration, Rosary, Eucharist—as a constant “yes” to God. The scapular is not worn in isolation; its meaning is enriched and sustained by a sacramental life:

  • Confession purifies your heart, making you more receptive to Mary’s guidance.

  • Adoration draws you closer to Jesus, whom Mary always leads us to.

  • Rosary keeps you united with Mary in prayer, meditating on the mysteries of Christ.

  • Eucharist nourishes you with the grace needed to live out your consecration and imitate Mary’s virtues.

Living the Promise

By wearing the Brown Scapular with devotion, you express your trust in Mary’s protection and your commitment to follow her example. The scapular is a “habit”—a permanent orientation of your Christian conduct, woven of prayer, sacramental life, and acts of charity. It is a daily reminder that you belong to Jesus through Mary, and that she is always near, guiding and protecting you on your journey to holiness.

Let us, as members of Fatima Family America, embrace this sign of Marian devotion with sincerity and faith, allowing it to transform our hearts and draw us ever closer to Christ.
