The Crisis that is Killing Society Today

The contemporary crisis of masculinity and femininity is a profound concern for Catholic Christians, as it touches the very heart of human identity and vocation. In a world increasingly shaped by technology, material comfort, and shifting family dynamics, the traditional virtues associated with manhood and womanhood are often neglected or misunderstood. This erosion has significant spiritual and societal consequences, impacting not only individuals but the future of families and communities.

The Catholic Understanding of Masculinity and Femininity

From a Catholic perspective, masculinity and femininity are not mere social constructs but gifts from God, rooted in the creation of humanity “male and female” (Genesis 1:27). Each is called to reflect unique aspects of God’s image: men in their strength, leadership, and self-sacrifice; women in their nurturing, receptivity, and life-giving love. The Catechism of the Catholic Church emphasizes the complementarity of the sexes, teaching that “man and woman were made ‘for each other’” (CCC 372).

The Impact of Video Games and Life Comforts

Modern society, however, often distracts young people from discovering and embracing these God-given identities. Video games, while not inherently evil, can become a source of escapism, especially for boys and young men. Instead of cultivating virtues such as courage, discipline, and responsibility, many retreat into virtual worlds where risk and reward are simulated, relationships are superficial, and effort is disconnected from real-life consequences. Sadly, it is not solely the children playing these games, it is grown men with families.

Similarly, the pursuit of comfort and convenience has dulled the willingness to embrace sacrifice and hard work—qualities essential to both authentic masculinity and femininity. The Gospel calls Christians to “take up their cross” (Matthew 16:24), yet a culture obsessed with ease often undermines the development of perseverance, patience, and generosity.

The family is the primary school of virtue, where children learn what it means to be a man or woman. Yet, the pressures of modern life—demanding work schedules, economic anxieties, and the allure of constant connectivity—leave many parents exhausted and distracted. As a result, many children are deprived of the attentive presence and intentional formation they need.

When fathers are absent or disengaged, boys lack strong role models for responsible manhood, and girls miss the affirmation that helps them understand their worth. As a father of ten I know at times I find myself disengaged. We have to stay focused and be available for our children.

When mothers are overburdened or unavailable, the nurturing environment necessary for emotional and spiritual growth is weakened. The Church teaches that parents are the “first heralds of the faith” (CCC 1656), but this mission is threatened when family life is fragmented.

A Call to Renewal

The beauty of Catholic tradition offers a path forward rooted in Christ and the wisdom of the saints. Restoring the true meaning of masculinity and femininity requires a renewed commitment to prayer, sacramental life, and intentional family culture. Parents must reclaim their role as primary educators, modeling virtue and fostering authentic relationships. Communities should support families in their mission, providing mentorship and opportunities for meaningful service.

Young people, too, must be challenged to seek greatness—not in virtual achievements or material comfort, but in the pursuit of holiness, self-gift, and love. By embracing their God-given identity and vocation, they can become the men and women our world desperately needs.

In summary, the crisis of masculinity and femininity is a spiritual and cultural challenge that demands a Catholic response rooted in truth, love, and sacrifice. Only by returning to these foundations can we hope to build a future where every person flourishes according to God’s plan.
