A Divine Encounter: The May 13 Fatima Apparition and Its Timeless Message

By John C. Preiss

On a serene spring day, May 13, 1917, an extraordinary event unfolded in the humble village of Fatima, Portugal—an event that would forever change the spiritual landscape of the Catholic world and touch countless hearts across generations.

Three shepherd children—Lucia dos Santos, age 10, and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto, ages 8 and 6—were tending their family's sheep in the fields near the tiny village when something remarkable occurred. After witnessing two flashes of light resembling lightning, they beheld a vision of "a Lady all in white, more brilliant than the sun" standing above a holm oak tree.

The Lady, whose beauty was indescribable, appeared with a face that was "neither sad nor happy, but serious," conveying a gentle yet profound message. She wore a pure white mantle edged with gold that fell to her feet, and in her hands, she held a rosary that "shone like stars". The children stood merely a yard and a half away, enveloped in the radiant light that emanated from her presence.

When young Lucia gathered the courage to ask where this luminous figure had come from, the Lady responded simply, "I come from Heaven". With maternal tenderness, she reassured the frightened children, saying, "Please don't be afraid of me, I'm not going to harm you".

A Message of Peace and Prayer

The heavenly visitor did not appear merely to astonish. She came with a purpose—a message that resonates with even greater urgency today. The Lady asked the children to "pray the Rosary every day, to bring peace to the world and an end to the war". This was no small request in 1917, as World War I was ravaging Europe.

She emphasized devotion to the Holy Trinity and specifically highlighted the necessity of prayers and devotions to her Immaculate Heart for the salvation of souls. The Lady would return five more times, appearing on the 13th day of each month through October, gradually revealing what would become known as the three secrets of Fatima. Later in life as she aged she revealed now we need peace within our lives.

The Miracle That Made the World Believe

The Lady promised the children that God would perform a miracle on October 13 so that people would believe their testimony. On that day, approximately 70,000 people gathered at Fatima and witnessed what has been described as the "Miracle of the Sun," where the sun appeared to dance and fall toward Earth before returning to its normal position. This extraordinary phenomenon confirmed for many the authenticity of the children's experiences.

Living the Fatima Message Today

The apparition of May 13, 1917, was not merely a historical event but the beginning of a spiritual journey that continues to invite our participation. The message of Fatima speaks directly to our modern hearts, often distracted by noise and consumed by worldly concerns.

In a world still plagued by conflict, division, and spiritual indifference, Our Lady's simple request to "pray the Rosary every day to obtain peace for the world" offers a path forward. This call to prayer is not just about reciting words but about creating space in our lives for contemplation and connection with the divine.

The emphasis on devotion to the Immaculate Heart reminds us of the power of spiritual purity and compassion. In a culture often focused on external achievements, Fatima calls us back to the interior life—to conversion of heart and sincere repentance.

The children's unwavering faith despite ridicule and persecution teaches us about courage in conviction. Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta embraced their mission with childlike trust, reminding us that spiritual wisdom often comes through simplicity and openness.

As we commemorate this sacred encounter that began on May 13, we are invited to make the Fatima message a living reality in our daily lives—through faithful prayer, especially the Rosary; through acts of reparation and sacrifice for the conversion of sinners; and through devoted attention to the state of our own hearts.

The Lady of Fatima continues to speak across time, inviting each of us to become instruments of peace in a troubled world. Her message is not confined to history books or pilgrim sites but seeks expression through transformed lives and renewed spirits. In answering her call, we find not just a devotional practice but a pathway to authentic peace—both within ourselves and throughout our world.
